Top 10 Healthy Resolutions for 2019

Resolutions are when people make a firm decision to change something in their life or choose not to do something. These types of decisions often bring a sense of purpose through a pledge or intention to do something different in the New Year.

Some common resolutions include:

  • Travel More

  • Spend Time with Family and Friends

  • Volunteer

  • Be More involved

  • Improve Physical Well-being

  • Improve Mental Well-being

To live a happy and healthy New Year, try one (or all) of these 10 resolutions!

  1. Mindful Eating and Meal Prepping: The holidays bring a lot of delicious food items and tasty drinks, so, in the new year, try being more mindful of your eating. Meal prepping is a great way to portion control the food you’re intaking. Successful meal preppers seem to find Sundays as the best day for weekly meal prep. Plus, ensure that you take the time to slow down when you’re eating. Being rushed or distracted leads to overeating.

  2. Rest Up and Relax: Wintertime brings days that are shorter and nights that are longer, so it’s time to rest up. Your body should be getting roughly 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. There are a few ways to ensure you’re sleeping just right—dim display lights, darken curtains, turn down the thermostat, and replace your mattress every ten years and you might find your nights a bit more peaceful.

  3. Have an Attitude of Gratitude: It’s very important to have a happy and healthy mindset during the new year. Try to reflect on the day as soon as you wake up and before going to bed. Note what you found grateful and the positives of the day. Improving your attitude in 2019 will bring a lot of merriment and joy.

  4. Exercise 30 Minutes Every Day: Spend at least 30 minutes exercising every day. That means get outside, walk around a mall, or purchase a gym membership to get your body moving and grooving this New Year! We suggest, even if you’re busy throughout the day, to take three 10-minute breaks and walk, whether that’s around your office or with a buddy. You’ll feel much happier throughout the day, and it’s an excellent way to have a clarity break.

  5. Try a 30-Day Challenge: Along with exercising daily, think about testing out a 30-day challenge. There are many different types of trials for you to partake in, whether it’s exercising or healthy eating. After 21 days, you’ll have formed a new habit!

  6. Get an Annual Physical: While, this may sound like a given, not everyone remembers to schedule an annual physical. It’s common for adults to skip this important part of their healthcare, especially when they are feeling well. Seeing your primary Family Medicine or Internal Medicine provider is crucial to your overall health. It is important to receive preventive care and monitor such things as your blood pressure, weight gain/loss, cholesterol and general well-being. You’ll see how you are doing from year to year and if any changes are needed to maintain your good health.

  7. Create Your Family Health History: Do you know your family health history? It’s essential to create a medical family health tree which maps and records any illnesses, conditions, surgeries, and more within your family tree. Compiling important information about health can help you understand the risks for a disease. Check out these steps to building your medical history.

  8. Seek a Way to Destress: Stress comes in all shapes and sizes, so, in 2019, resolve to find a way to destress. Whether that’s enjoying a cup of tea on a Sunday morning with friends, joining a yoga group, reading a new book, or taking a bath after the end of a long day, there are plenty of ways for you to declutter your mind and relax in the new year.

  9. Stay Hydrated: One resolution that people often forget is remembering to stay hydrated! Winter months bring cold and dry air that sometimes make people dehydrated. To stay healthy, drink 8 (8oz) glasses of water daily to keep your body adequately hydrated. We suggest investing in a good, reusable water bottle that you are able to bring with you throughout the day.

  10. Be Proactive with Your Health: It’s crucial to be proactive with your health in the new year. Don’t wait until something unfortunate happens to force you to see your provider. Do monthly check-ups in the comfort of your own home. Taking a closer look at your skin, being sure you’re getting the right vitamins, and understanding your body are all ways to be a proactive patient.
