What to Look for in an OB/GYN

Searching for an OB/GYN during your pregnancy can be a lot of trial and error. You think you’ve found the perfect provider, only to find out they’re not in network. Or, perhaps you’re narrowing a few down, but just can’t decide which one will best fit your specific needs.

Choosing an obstetrician is a lot like choosing a companion for the next nine months, except that this companion is responsible for your and your child’s well-being.

From the initial appointment, to the actual delivery, and all the check-ups in between, you’ll be seeing a lot of your prenatal provider. To help make the process a little easier, we’ve outlined a few things to keep in mind when searching for your OB/GYN.

4 Things to Look for in an OB/GYN

Consider Their Gender

For some women, it is very important that they see a female provider. If this is important to you, be sure that whoever you choose does not have any male partners who cover labor and delivery for her.

In addition, if you begin seeing a provider but realize that it’s not going quite as planned, be sure to choose a clinic that allows you to switch providers at any time during your pregnancy.

Location is Crucial

Be aware of how hard it will be to get to their office from your home or work since you're going to be stopping in a lot over the next nine months. Also, after your first visit, consider the office itself and how it's run: Was it simple to make an appointment? How long was your wait time? Did you feel welcomed and comfortable by staff or awkward and rushed? If the clinic is difficult to get to, has little parking, or the staff isn’t friendly, that’s a definite sign that you need to look for another option.

Respect Your Personal Needs

When looking at a doctor holistically, keep your own needs at the top of your mind. If you feel most comfortable with a doctor with more experience, or perhaps with a certain viewpoint, take that into consideration. Look for doctors who have whatever is most important to you. Having a little peace of mind goes a long way through pregnancy, and you’ll thank yourself for putting in the extra research later on. If you have had a previous cesarean delivery and desire to have a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) you will want to ask your doctor if this is an option that is offered.

If you think it’s selfish to look for an OB/GYN based on your personal interests, think again. After all, this is your pregnancy. Picking a provider that you feel meets all your needs brings nothing but good to your situation.

Examine Your Health History

Do you have any chronic illnesses – such as high blood pressure, epilepsy, heart disease, or diabetes – or previous complications that may require special care? If so, ask the doctors you're considering what experience they have in caring for patients like you. It's essential that you choose a provider that handles high-risk pregnancies if need be.

Throughout the entire process, you should feel comfortable, have confidence in your OB/GYN’s abilities, and most importantly, feel listened to.
